What a session may look like at Windsong:

Hours are by appointment only. Please do not stop by unannounced as I may be in a confidential session. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required for all sessions. We will be out in the corral on dirt, and there may be blowing dust/horse hair, so consider wearing casual clothes. I will refer to the equine partner as a horse in the following description, but they may actually be a pony. These are learning sessions rather than entertainment, so children should behave as in a classroom environment, with your supervision.

If you are doing a grooming session, I will halter and tie a horse up and show you the purpose of each brush and discuss safety practices. You can brush the horse, braid their mane and put ribbons on them if you like. We do need to remove ribbons afterwards to make sure they don’t fall off and accidentally get eaten with their hay.

If you are doing a one-on-one extended session, we will meet at the beginning to determine what you would like to see happen. Or, you can have no agenda at all, and just relax and spend time with the horse. We will go out and meet the horses to decide which one to partner you with, then have a grooming session so you can become comfortable with each other prior to the subsequent activity. These are great for relieving stress, or just giving you time for reflection on your goals in life. After the session, we can meet for a recap if you like. I will have worksheets available for your use if you’d like to track your progress. For those continuing with subsequent sessions, I have small notebooks available where you can journal.

For group extended sessions, I will discuss ahead of time with the leader what their goal is for the session so I know what to set up. Some examples of goals are overcoming obstacles, problem solving, communication skills, empathy, leadership, teamwork. We will begin with grooming the horses first, then move on to the equine activity.  We will meet after the session for a recap.
