What a session may look like at Windsong:

Hours are by appointment only. Please do not stop by unannounced as I may be in a confidential session. Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required. We will be out in the corral on dirt, and there may be blowing dust/horse hair, so consider wearing casual clothes. I will refer to the equine partner as a horse in the following description, but they may actually be a pony. These are unmounted learning sessions rather than entertainment, so children should behave as in a classroom environment, with your supervision.

First, we will meet in the office or outdoor seating area for introductions, go over forms, and discuss what you would like to see happen during your time here. Then we will move into the barn area. Each session will start with grooming the horse. I will show you the purpose of each brush and discuss safety practices around equines. You can braid their mane and put ribbons on it if you like. We will need to remove ribbons after the session to make sure they don’t fall off and get eaten with their hay.

Next, we will move on to the activity. This may look different for each person, depending on what we’ve discussed previously. We may set up obstacles to lead the horse through, or we may have classroom time and discuss horse safety and care, or do a horse-related craft.

For group extended sessions, I will discuss ahead of time with the leader what their goal is for the session so I know what to set up. Some examples of goals are overcoming obstacles, problem solving, communication skills, empathy, leadership, teamwork. We will begin with grooming the horses first, then move on to the equine activity.  We will meet after the session for a recap.
